Originally a web comic hosted on platforms Tumblr and, later, Tapas, Alice Oseman's Heartstopper has garnered over 52 1000000 views. Now, the graphic novel's massive fanbase can rejoice; the Netflix adaptation of Oseman'south queer young adult (YA) romance is bright.
If you're anything similar me, recently published queer YA romances, like You Should See Me in a Crown past Leah Johnson, got you through some of the concluding few years' bleakest moments. Sure, the primary audience of these stories is teens, but, for queer adults who didn't have these touchstones growing upwards, there'due south something so blithesome — and almost healing — about knowing these stories exist in books and on screen at present.
Of course, Heartstopper isn't the only coming-of-age show (or movie) that centers LGBTQ+ characters and allows them the novelty of happiness. Relatable and incredibly sweetness without beingness saccharine, Heartstopper would be worth information technology for Nick and Charlie lone. Originally titled Beards, this Irish dramedy is set in the '90s, and, as you might guess, follows the story of two queer teens, Eddie (Fionn O'Shea) and Bister (Lola Petticrew), who decide to date each other. The goal? Ward off any lurking suspicions that they're both gay — making information technology through loftier school, afterward all, is plenty of a burden in rural Ireland.
The leads have great energy — especially since their characters are coming at the fake heterosexual relationship, and their true identities, with such different approaches. For Amber, who experienced a difficult loss, getting out of their minor town and living a punk, lesbian life in a place like Dublin would exist a dream come true. Beloved, Victor (2020–22)
This Honey, Simon (2018) spin-off certainly captures a lot of the aforementioned sweetness as Heartstopper. Although, much similar Love, Simon, information technology feels like a more sanitized version of a coming-of-age story at times. Often, you think Love, Victor is really going to go in that location — and so it holds back. (Possibly that has to exercise with its Disney connection.)
In a review for the show's offset season, IndieWire noted "The sweet gay Latinx teen love story is candy for the soul" — and that captures it perfectly. And that's all well and skilful; we need our fluffy, sweetness stuff every now and then. Plus, the young cast of the three-season Hulu show — including Michael Cimino and George Sear, who play love interests Victor and Benji, respectively — brings a lot of charm to the (lunch) table.
And, when the show returns for its 3rd and final flavor, we'll be curious to see if Victor knocked on Benji or Rahim'due south (Anthony Keyvan) door.
The Half of Information technology (2020)
You may be familiar with director Alice Wu's debut, Saving Face up (2004), which remains one of the greatest rom-coms of all time. Princess Cyd (2017)
Princess Cyd is that little slice-of-life, gem of a film that you stumble upon when information technology feels similar Netflix is only suggesting the same options to you lot again and once again. Or maybe that was but my experience. At first, I thought information technology might exist a fleck too cheesy: sixteen-twelvemonth-old Cyd (Jessie Pinnick) is sent to spend the summer with her estranged aunt, Miranda (Rebecca Spence), an academic and writer.
Things are awkward between Cyd and Miranda; they take no idea how to exist around each other, no blueprint for their configuration of family. Eventually, the 2 assist each other grow. While Cyd learns more nigh fine art and the world, Miranda learns to relax a bit. Testify Me Love (1998)
Released in Sweden under the controversial title F-cking Åmål, Show Me Dearest is a queer cult classic. It centers on Agnes (Rebecka Liljeberg) and Elin (Alexandra Dahlström), two teens living in the small boondocks of Åmål. While Elin is pop, but bored with life, Agnes lives with low and feels she has no friends. After her birthday party goes amiss, Agnes finds herself embarrassed, in one case again, when Elin kisses her on a cartel.
That does pb to some nighttime moments for Agnes — and we'd like to note a content alarm for self-harm — but the film doesn't linger too long there. Elin ends up comforting Agnes, and the two decide their bug could all exist solved if they go out "f-cking" Åmål and live in Stockholm instead. While adventuring together, Elin realizes she does have feelings for Agnes, merely she doesn't know how to express them. Prove Me Love really is a bona fide archetype.
Pariah (2011)
Executive-produced past Spike Lee, Pariah marks acclaimed managing director Dee Rees' debut characteristic-length motion-picture show and was adjusted from her award-winning 2007 curt of the same name. Directed and written by Portrait of a Lady on Fire filmmaker Céline Sciamma, H2o Lilies also stars (a young) Adèle Haenel as Floriane — the girl who the closeted Marie (Pauline Acquart) is enamored with.
